What is Organ Donation?

Organ donation is a noble humanitarian act that gives others renewed hope in life and represents the highest meaning of giving, tolerance, and brotherhood, whereby a person consents to donate organs to save another life. These values create a vivid scenario of community solidarity, where a person can save many patients, including those suffering from cancer, heart disease, lung failure, cirrhosis, kidney failure and more.

There are two categories of donors. First, individuals who give one kidney or a part of the liver during life. Second, for those who donate after death, one person has the potential of giving away eight organs: Heart, Lungs, Liver, Kidneys, corneas, and pancreas.

What is the National Program for Donation and Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissue - ‘Hayat’?

The National Programme for Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation, “Hayat” is a national system to enhance efforts for the donation and transplantation of human organs and tissues in accordance with the highest international standards and practices in the United Arab Emirates and the region.

Working in coordination with various strategic partners locally and globally, the programme aims to encourage community members to donate organs and contribute to improving the health and wellbeing for all. Additionally, it seeks to facilitate transplantation operations and encourage the community to adopt a healthy lifestyle. The UAE allows transplantation of human organs and tissues from both living donors and the deceased in accordance with the provisions indicated in the Federal Decree Law No. 5 of 2016 on Regulation of Human Organs and Tissue Transplantation.
